Tech's defense shines in 8-4 win over Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – Virginia Tech defeated Old Dominion, 8-4, on Tuesday afternoon in Norfolk. The stout defensive effort by the Hokies tied its season-best in goals allowed.

In goal, Jocelyn Torres had nine saves -- the most since here 15-save performance against Notre Dame on March 16. As a whole, Old Dominion had 23 turnovers, 10 of which Virginia Tech was credited for causing. Jordan Tilley had a team-high three caused turnovers.

Virginia Tech got off to a hot start scoring-wise, leading 4-0 at the end of the first quarter and by as many as five goals early in the second quarter.

After that early burst, Tech struggled to find the net for the rest of the half while Old Dominion added two before the break.

Throughout the second half, the Hokies only tacked on three more goals, but their consistent defense refused to let the Monarchs creep into the game. 

Tech had three multi-goal scorers in the form of Hannah Mardiney, Olivia Vergano and Paige Tyson. Freshmen Caroline Little and Ella Rishko contributed to the scoring efforts, as well.

The Hokies will turn their focus now to a big ACC clash with No. 19 Clemson on Saturday at noon. Tech and the Tigers sit sixth and seventh in the ACC standings, making the matchup impactful for the upcoming ACC Championships.
