Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech gave No. 20 Georgia Tech all it could handle on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3.
The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead in doubles claiming both matches 6-3 on courts two and three leaving court one abandoned at 5-3, putting themselves up 1-0.
Semra Aksu made quick work of her Georgia Tech challenger dispatching her in the only two-set match of the day, 7-5, 6-4. After being down 5-3 in the second set, Katie Andreini roared all the way back to win in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, tying the match at two.
Virginia Tech continued to fight in singles with Tamara Barad Itzhaki pushing the third set of her match to a tiebreak. The Hertzeliya, Israel native raced ahead to a 5-0 advantage but was unable to finish off the match, falling 7-5. Just as court two went final, Özlem Uslu picked up the biggest win of the season, defeating No. 7 Carol Lee, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The victory was the first top-10 singles win for the Hokies this season and the first of Uslu's career.
