Fixsen and Mammel claim gold at ACC Outdoor Championships

RALEIGH, N.C. – Virginia Tech's Julia Fixsen and Rebecca Mammel opened the 2023 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships winning the the women's hammer throw and pole vault events in Raleigh, N.C. on Thursday. The women's team is currently in first place with 42.5 points, while the men's team is in second with 24.5 points.  Duke leads the men with 31 points after five scored events. 

Fixsen won the pole vault competition clearing a season-best height of 14' 4.50" (4.38m), setting a facility record at the Paul Derr Track. The women's pole vault squad put the Hokies in the lead with 18.5 points as freshman Kenna Stimmel placed fourth clearing 13' 8.50" (4.18m). Journey Gurley tied for fifth with a season-best height of 13' 8.50" (4.18m). 

Jacob Rice claimed silver in the men's pole vault clearing a personal-best height of 17' 1.75" (5.23m). Harrison Rice finished fourth (16' 10" (5.13m)), followed by Conner McClure in fifth (16' 10" (5.13m)). 

Throws 
Senior Rebecca Mammel won her first ACC outdoor championship title competing in the hammer throw, her third career ACC conference title. Mammel threw a season-best distance of 206' 10" (63.05m). Sara Killinen finished second for the Hokies with a mark of 205' 1" (62.50m), followed by Barbora Stejfova in fifth throwing 193' 9" (59.06m). The women's throw squad added 22 points to team's score. 

Khalil Bedoui placed sixth in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 204'6" (62.33m). 

Jumps 
Victoria Gorlova rounded out the team's score finishing seventh in the long jump with a season-best distance of 19' 11.50" (6.08m). 

Distance 
Senior Antonio Lopez Segura added six points to the men's score claiming bronze in the 10,000m with a time of 30:19.24.  Arlo Ludewick and Viktor Idhammar advanced to the men's 1500m finals finishing fifth (3:41.25) and eighth (3:41.48) in the prelims. 

Distance runner Grace Boone qualified for the women's 1500m finals clocking the fourth fastest time of the day in the prelims 4:17.18. 

Decathlon - (100m, LJ, SP, HJ, 400m)  
After five events,  Jacob Spotswood is sixth in the decathlon with 3531 points. 

Day Two of the ACC Outdoor Championships begins at 11:30 a.m. for Virginia Tech with Spotswood and Clay Eckert continuing on in the decathlon.
