Hokies fall 63-46 at Duke Thursday night

DURHAM, NC --Elizabeth Kitley, Cayla King and Samyha Suffren combined to score 36 of Virginia Tech's 46 total points, but the Hokies fell to the Duke Blue Devils 63-46 on the road Thursday.

Kitley notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Hokies (13-4, 4-2). Suffren also tacked on nine points and two steals off of the bench and King chipped in as well with nine points.


How It Happened

Virginia Tech started out the scoring by going on an 11-0 run, culminating in a three from King, to take an early lead with 5:39 left in the first quarter. The Hokies then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with an 18-7 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.

The Hokies maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 26-21 edge. Virginia Tech dominated in the paint, scoring four of its eight points close to the basket.

Virginia Tech then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Blue Devils 48-34 entering the fourth. Virginia Tech took advantage of two Duke turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of takeaways.

Duke kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-41 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 61-46 with 1:34 to go in the contest. Duke responded and outscored the Hokies the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 63-46. Virginia Tech took advantage of four Duke turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of those takeaways.
