Cooper Flynn named ACC Wrestler of the Week

BLACKSBURG, VA – For the second time this season, redshirt sophomore Cooper Flynn was named Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week – marking the third time a Hokie has garnered the honor this season. Flynn was undefeated over the week stretch to the tune of knocking off previously No. 2 and undefeated Noah Surtin of Missouri on January 2 and followed that performance up with a decision win over Cornell's No. 12 Brett Ungar on Sunday, January 7, both wins coming on the road in the first competitions of 2024.

Ranked No. 10 at 125-pounds, Flynn continued his strong season with another upset victory – this time against previously undefeated No. 2 Noah Surtin – to open the Hokies versus Missouri in Columbia, MO to begin the new year. Flynn struck first with a takedown in the opening period, but Surtin would score two escapes and a riding time point to send the bout into overtime. Flynn would secure a bodylock and plant Surtin on his back for the winning scoring sequence, 10-3.

Flynn would double down and hand 2023 Cliff Keen finalist No. 12 Brett Ungar a decision loss on Sunday in Ithaca for his fourth ranked victory of the season. Flynn would secure a takedown early and attempt a cradle but couldn't find back points. Flynn would secure the match with a riding time advantage, 4-3 after numerous scoring attempts as the match came to an end.

Flynn rises to No. 8 in the latest Intermat rankings and improves to 7-2 on the season after pulling his Olympic redshirt in December. Flynn and the Hokies return to action on Friday and will look to get back in the win column as they host Appalachian State in Cassell Coliseum at 7 p.m. EST live on ACC Network Extra. Admission is free.
