ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Virginia Tech's jump squad wrapped up the first day of competition at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Friday, highlighted by Victoria Gorlova breaking her own long jump school record.
Gorlova first broke her previous school record of 20' 7.25" (6.28m) this year at the Doc Hale VT Meet on Feb. 2 with a mark of 20' 8" (6.30m). In Albuquerque, she jumped a distance of 21' 1.25" (6.43m) finishing second in a field of 98 athletes. Gorlova's mark ranks 11th in the nation and first in the ACC.
Senior Brandon Burke won the men's high jump clearing the bar at a height of 7' 0.5" (2.15m), in the jumpoff for first. Aidan Clark tied for second clearing 6' 11.5" (2.12m).
Freshman Nate Paris set a personal-best mark in the long jump on his first attempt, finishing fifth at 24' 11.25" (7.60m). Caleb Stephens placed 19th in the field of 51 athletes jumping 23' 5.5" (7.15m).
Sprints
In Fayetteville, Ark. sprinter Judson Lincoln IV finished second among 64 athletes in the 400m recording the fourth-fastest time in the nation 45.53. Lincoln's time is the second-fastest time in Tech history, and he is the only athlete in the ACC to run a sub-46 in the 400m this season.
Kennedy Harrison recorded a 400m season-best time of 47.55, finishing 28th.
Barbora Malikova continues to lead the women's 400m in the conference recording a season-best time of 52.99. Malikova is the only female athlete in the ACC to record a sub-53 this season.
Distance
In Nashville, Tenn., Christian Jackson and Star Price led the Hokies to victory in the men's and women's 600m.
Tech ran 1-2-3 in the women's race with Price crossing the line first with a personal-best time of 1:29.79. Lindsey Butler followed behind in second (1:30.27) and Hannah Ballowe claimed third with a personal-best time of 1:32.45. Freshman Avery Legault placed sixth crossing the finish line at 1:33.35.
Jackson controlled the men's 600m race from start to finish recording a personal-best time of 1:17.64. Nick Plant finished third stopping the clock at 1:18.40. Freshman Dylan DeCambre placed first in heat two with a personal-best time of 1:19.93, fifth overall among college athletes.
Junior Ava Hassebrock finished 28th in the mile (4:52.61) outrunning over 85 athletes competing in the event. Ethan Mills placed 26th in the men's race with a time of 4:07.26.
Junior Sarah Leach competed in the 5000m for the first time in her career finishing 12th at 17:09.80.
Throws
Sara Killinen placed seventh in the weight throw invite throwing 67' 11" (20.70m) on her third attempt. In the open section, Barbora Stejfova placed fourth with a mark of 63' 11.5" (19.49m).
Khalil Bedoui finished ninth in the men's weight throw invite throwing 63' 9.5" (19.44m).
