Pledge Per Home Run

TEMPE, AZ --Sophomore Lyndsey Grein had everything working on Friday, punching out 10 BYU hitters over 6.1 innings of work to help propel the No. 21/17 Virginia Tech Hokies past the Cougars 2-1.

In addition to her 10 strikeouts, Grein (2-0) tossed 6.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and walking one for Virginia Tech (5-0-1).

Offensively, the Hokies were paced by freshman Michelle Chatfield, who went 1-for-2 on the day with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Rachel Castine reached second base due to an error committed by the shortstop. Subsequently, Chatfield delivered a single down the left field, allowing Castine to cross home plate. Following this, Lyla Blackwell, who entered as a pinch runner for Chatfield, successfully stole second base and advanced to third on a ground ball hit by Kylie Aldridge. Blackwell then scored the second run of the game for the Hokies as a result of a passed ball. The score remained 2-1 for the rest of the game, as the Hokies held on for the win.
