DURHAM, N.C. --The No. 15/11 Virginia Tech Hokies got a boost from junior Bre Peck, who strung together three hits in a 6-5 loss to the No. 5/5 Duke Blue Devils Friday.
Sophomore Lyndsey Grein (7-3) got the ball to start for Virginia Tech (25-7-1, ) and took the loss.
In addition to her three hits, Peck had a home run and three RBI to lead the Hokies. Freshman Michelle Chatfield compiled a noteworthy performance hitting her 15th home run of the season breaking the program's freshman home run record. Senior Emma Ritter also contributed for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a triple and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. Virginia Tech hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring four runs.
The Blue Devils then rallied to score five runs and take a 5-4 lead before the Hokies got back on the board in the seventh. Virginia Tech scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of junior Cori McMillan, which brought the score level at 5-5. Duke then scored one time in the bottom half of the seventh to break the tie and grab the 6-5 win.
