Michelle Chatfield named TUCCI/NFCA Division 1 National Freshman Of The Year Top 25 Finalist

Louisville, Ky. - Virginia Tech infielder Michelle Chatfield has been named a Top 25 Finalist for the TUCCI/NFCA Division 1 National Freshman of the Year award, the NFCA announced Thursday afternoon.
 
The winner will be announced prior to the 2024 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
 
As one of the top power hitters in the nation, Chatfield is ranked sixth in the nation with 19 home runs per 46 games. The slugger also owns a .809 slugging percentage, currently ranked sixth in the ACC. This season the freshman boasts a .321 batting average, 42 hits, and 27 walks.
 
Her 19 home runs is currently tied for the program's single season home run record. On March 29th 2024, she hit her 15th homer of the season, setting the program's freshman home run record against No. 5 Duke. From February 25th to March 3rd she hit a home run in four straight games. She also posted three home runs and six RBIs in the 25-0 win against UMES.
 
The Woodgrove, Virginia native has served primarily as a first baseman for the Hokies, but has also played in right field, third base, and even been seen behind the plate. She owns a .977 fielding percentage with 11 double plays this year.
