After leading Marquette to three NCAA tournaments and over 100 wins, Virginia Tech introduced Megan Duffy as the eighth head coach in program history at an introductory news conference on Friday morning inside Cassell Coliseum.
Duffy spent the past five years in Milwaukee, with the Golden Eagles, compiling a 110-46 overall mark and 64-30 record in Big East play.
"This is everything I dreamed of in the last week and a half and even after many, many years of being a college coach to have this opportunity to sit in front of an incredible fan base, an incredible community with a vision that we're going to just keep going," Duffy said. "I just want to express my gratitude for this opportunity and the excitement that's ahead for Hokie women's basketball.
"This incredible institution, the fans, the alumni base, the supporters is really unlike anything I've ever seen. There's been times in my past that I dreamed about coming to a university that loved women's basketball like you do, and I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be your leader for women's basketball."
Duffy takes over a program in Blacksburg coming off of a 2024 ACC regular-season crown and is just a year removed from an ACC tournament title and Final Four berth in 2023.
She has spent seven years as a head coach at two different stops, both at Marquette (2019-24) and Miami (Ohio) (2017-19), where she finished off her tenure with a 44-20 mark and two postseason appearances with the RedHawks.
"She's a proven winner," Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock said. "She's a sitting head coach that has built two programs and is now ready to lead ours. … We felt coach has the ability to succeed at an elite level of college basketball and looking down at the nation's very best and beating them. She's respected in the sport nationally as a coach and she was one heck of a player. She has paid her dues.
" … She's an elite competitor with a high motor, that fire, energy and passion to succeed. She will help us retool and elevate our program, keeping and elevating the Hokies on the national stage."
As a player, Duffy suited up for four seasons under legendary head coach Muffet McGraw at Notre Dame from 2002-06. She averaged 10.2 points per game during her time with the Irish, dishing out four assists a contest.
She then proceeded to spend some time in the WNBA, drafted as a third-round pick by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2006 WNBA draft.
Following her playing career coming to a close, Duffy entered the coaching ranks, where she made stops as an assistant at St. Johns (2009-12), George Washington (2012-14) and Michigan (2014-17) before starting her stint as a head coach.
The Dayton, Ohio, native inked a six-year deal to lead the Hokies.
"I've been a winner," Duffy said. "I don't know anything else. …. There's going to be some building. We're going to establish our culture. We're going to build relationships. We're going to fill out our roster with women who want to do it the right way, who want to win, [who] care about each other."
" … You're [getting] a head coach that will give every ounce of energy to this program, these relationships in the quest of winning championships. … I never say we're rebuilding, we're building the next great championship team."
