RALEIGH, NC --Senior Cameron Fagan collected four RBIs to help propel the No. 15/13 Virginia Tech Hokies over the NC State Wolfpack 14-1 on Saturday.
Freshman Emma Mazzarone (7-2) started in the circle and picked up the win for Virginia Tech (27-9-1, ). The left-hander went four innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out two. Sophomore Cassie Grizzard also made an impact in the circle for the Hokies, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.
Fagan went 2-for-3 with a home run in addition to her four RBIs for the Hokies. Senior Maija Louko put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Senior Addy Greene also contributed for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding a home run, three walks and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Virginia Tech's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Louko.
The Wolfpack failed to push any runs across before the Hokies offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Virginia Tech offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Kylie Aldridge, which brought the score to 10-0 in favor of the Hokies.
Virginia Tech kept NC State scoreless before expanding their lead to 13-0 the following inning. The Hokies scored three times, with a showing that included home runs from both Greene and Fagan.
The Wolfpack fought back, closing the gap to 13-1 until Virginia Tech added some insurance in the fifth. The Hokies recorded a run on junior Cori McMillan's two-out RBI double, bringing the Virginia Tech advantage to 14-1. The score remained 14-1 for the rest of the game, as the Hokies coasted to the win.
