CARY, N.C. – Following his breakout rookie season on the mound, Virginia Tech rising sophomore pitcher Brett Renfrow is one of 56 athletes who has been invited to partake in the 2024 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp, as comprised this year of a two-game showcase series on June 26 and June 27 at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
Renfrow will represent Virginia Tech on the nation's most premier stage for non-draft eligible college players, marking the third time spanning the past four summers during which the Hokies have produced national training camp participants. The native of Manassas, Virginia, joins the ranks of outfielder Gavin Cross (2021), pitcher Drue Hackenberg (2022) and outfielder Jack Hurley (2022) as the most recent Tech stars to don the red, white and blue during the Stars vs. Stripes series.
Under the 2024 format, USA Baseball's Stars vs. Stripes series will set the Collegiate National Team rosters for both the International Friendship Series – a five-game exhibition schedule against Chinese Taipei – as well as the Summer League Tour, a four-game exhibition schedule against select clubs from the Appalachian League and the Coastal Plain League. Both U.S. Collegiate National Team rosters will conclude their summer circuits with a head-to-head showcase game on Thursday, July 4, in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
When camp opens, Renfrow will strive to earn Virginia Tech's sixth all-time spot on the primary Collegiate National Team roster, following the ranks of Franklin Stubbs (1981), George Canale (1985), Trey McCoy (1986), Gavin Cross (2021) and Jack Hurley (2022). Most recently, Hurley's run with the 2022 Collegiate National Team culminated with a weeklong tournament in the Netherlands (Honkbalweek Haarlem), where the United States placed third behind first-place Netherlands and second-place Curaçao.
As a freshman, Renfrow did not begin working out as a pitcher at Virginia Tech until after his return from winter break, quickly ascending into the role as the Hokies' series-opening starter. On Feb. 16 at Charlotte, he became Tech's first true freshman hurler to start on Opening Day, proceeding to hold the 49ers to one hit through five shutout innings, collecting 15 outs from 17 batters faced.
Exiting the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship, Renfrow ranked among the top 15 ACC pitchers in ERA (4.92), strikeouts (78), innings pitched (75.0) and opposing batting average (.253). Among the Hokies, the 2024 All-ACC Third Team and ACC All-Freshman Team selection's six winning decisions were one short of matching teammate Brady Kirtner for the Virginia Tech team lead.
First pitch of both Stars vs. Stripes games on June 26 and June 27 is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
