BLACKSBURGWide receiver Jaylin Lane will wear No. 25 when the Hokies travel to Norfolk, Virginia to play Old Dominion this weekend. This will be the first time the graduate student will carry on the legacy of historic Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer. The Hokies’ matchup against Old Dominion is set for Saturday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Lane’s No. 25 nod comes after an impressive special teams showing last weekend. As time expired in the first quarter against Marshall, the Clover, South Carolina native ran 58 yards for a punt return touchdown, breaking three tackles in the process. The house call was the first score of the game, allowing the Hokies to jump out to a 7-0 lead en route to a 31-14 win against the Thundering Herd.

The 5-foot-10 receiver’s first season with the Hokies in 2023 was a productive one. Transferring from Middle Tennessee State, Lane corralled 41 passes for 538 yards and six touchdowns over 12 games. This season, Lane has been a quality target for quarterback Kyron Drones, leading the wide receiver corps with eight catches for a total of 103 yards. Against Vanderbilt in the season opener, the wideout tallied four receptions for 62 yards, including a 26-yard pass that led to a John Love field goal.

The weekly tradition of wearing No. 25 started in 2016 and has continued each season. Each week, a member of the special teams wears the number to recognize how influential Frank Beamer was to Tech football both as a player and a coach. The jersey number was retired in 2002. Fans can find more information on who has worn the jersey here.
