Virginia Tech secures sweep over UNC Greensboro

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech (4-4) collected it's first sweep of the season, downing UNC Greensboro (4-5) in straight sets.  The Hokies and Spartans had not met since 2009, and Tech expanded the advantage in the series history to 8-1 with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

The Hokies jumped out early, offensively and defensively, in set one.  Jordan Hallman, Hailey Pearce and Belle Patrick accumulated four kills each and Hallman, Jasmine Robinson, Sarah Malinowski and Viktoria Wahlgren paired up for eight total block assists.  The squad took set one 26-24.  

Patrick led offensively in set two, collecting seven kills on a .667 clip while Wahlgren put up 13 assists.  Leandra Mangual Duran was extremely active in the back row, racking up nine digs to help the Hokies to a 25-18 set two win.

Patrick and Robinson led the squad in kills during set three with four apiece, guiding the squad to a .423 clip.  Defensive efforts at the net elevated drastically with Wahlgren boasting one block solo and two assists and Robinson, Malinowski and Hallman notching two assists apiece.  Virginia Tech sealed the match with a dominating 25-13 set three victory.

GAME NOTES

  • Belle Patrick led the squad with a team-high 15 kills and .481 clip.  The outside hitter tacked on two digs and six perfect receptions in the match.
  • Viktoria Wahlgren had a (Virginia Tech) career-day with her first double-double as a Hokie.  The setter boasted 36 assists, 10 digs, four block assists, three kills, two service aces and one block solo.  A season-high average of 12 assists per set helped the squad to a .277 clip.
  • Jasmine Robinson accumulated a season-high five block assists and hit .500 with seven kills and just one error on 12 attempts.
  • Jordan Hallman collected her fifth game of the season with four or more block assists and tacked on five kills with a .571 clip.
  • Hailey Pearce finished with the second highest number of kills in the match with nine, and totaled three digs, one block assist and one service ace.
  • Leandra Mangual Duran secured the match-high of 15 digs, averging three per set with 11 perfect receptions.
  • Tech totaled 47 kills, 43 assists, 51 digs, 18 block assists and three service aces.
