Hokies fall in four to Lafayette

RICHMOND, Va. - The Hokies (2-3) fell to Lafayette (4-2) in four sets at the VCU Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies jumped out to an early lead in set one, with three four-point service runs to send the advantage up 17-11.  The early runs led to a 25-19 set win with Patrick and Malinowski tallying three kills apiece.

Sets two and three were a fight, with the squads trading serving rights, but ultimately Tech fell to the Leopards 17-25 and 21-25.  Lafayette led set four from the jump and despite signifcant efforts, the Hokies fell in four. 

GAME NOTES

  • Belle Patrick tallied the team-highs of nine kills with a .417 clip. The outside also collected five digs, 12 receptions and one block assist.
  • Jasmine Robinson's offensive efforts led to a .357 clip and a career-high tying eight kills for the middle blocker.
  • Jordan Hallman and Viktoria Wahlgren led defensive efforts at the net with three block assists apiece.  Hallman now has three or more block assists in all five matches played so far this season.
  • Wahlgren also recorded the match-high of 34 assists in the four-set match, averaging 8.5 per set.
  • Aisha Keric, Sierra Cates and Ella Guilfoy each dished two service aces in the match, with the squad recording eight total.
  • Three Hokies reached double-digit digs against the Leopards with Ece Yildiz leading with 16 and Hailey Pearce and Leandra Mangual Duran securing 10 each.
  • Tech totaled 41 kills, 38 assists, 62 digs, 10 block assists and eight aces.

UP NEXT

The Hokies will return to Cassell Coliseum to play host to Norfolk State, Cleveland State and UNC Greensboro for the Hokie Invitational from September 13-14.
