BLACKSBURG – As the Hokies gear up for their Thursday night clash against the Boston College Eagles, linebacker Kaleb Spencer is emerging as a pivotal player in Chris Marve’s defensive scheme. In his inaugural season at Virginia Tech, the 6-foot-2, 219-pound transfer from Miami is making significant contributions on special teams and as a supporting linebacker alongside Keonta Jenkins and Caleb Woodson. Spencer has consistently delivered game-changing plays at critical moments, demonstrating his growth and ability to perform under pressure. With kickoff set for Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. ET in Lane Stadium, all eyes will be on Spencer and the Hokies as they strive for victory.

Throughout the season, the Gloucester, Virginia native has earned increased opportunities as a linebacker, quickly establishing himself as a key component of the defensive unit. Spencer made an impact in weeks two and three, progressing from two tackles against Old Dominion to a season-high five tackles in a home game against Rutgers.

The sophomore’s standout performance against Miami solidified his status as a vital asset for the Hokies. In that game, Spencer recorded three tackles and made a crucial third-quarter interception at the Virginia Tech 3-yard line, returning it an impressive 77 yards into Miami territory. His efforts earned him a Pro Football Focus grade of 73.2, ranking him second overall defensively for the game.

In his most recent outing against Stanford, Spencer matched his season high with five tackles while also adding a sack and a forced fumble. In just two games, the Virginia product was able to register four TFLs, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble, further establishing himself as one of the squad’s key young talents.

Spencer's performances this season reflect his growth as a linebacker, bringing valuable speed and agility to Virginia Tech’s defense. His ability to cover ground and adjust to plays in real time shows his progress in key areas like awareness and positioning. As his football IQ continues to develop, Spencer’s contributions and production are becoming more noticeable, strengthening the unit with his evolving skill set.

As he prepares to face Boston College, Spencer will need to build on the strengths that fueled his standout performance against Stanford. This matchup will test the transfer’s growth and determination, offering fans another chance to watch him in action at Lane Stadium.
