LOXLEY, Ala. – Gareth Steyn of the Virginia Tech men's golf team fired a 2-under 214 (72-72-70) to tie for 24th at the Steelwood Collegiate, which wrapped up Sunday at Steelwood Country Club (par 72, 7,096 yards).
The redshirt junior logged 12 birdies, including five in the final round, to post his season-best, 54-hole showing. As a team, Tech placed 14th at 16-over 880 (291-294-295).
Illinois, ranked 12th in the country, topped the team leaderboard at 30-under 834 (276-283-275), two strokes ahead of Kennesaw State's 28-under 836 (282-281-273).
Kansas State's Nick Mason prevailed in the individual race with a 17-under 199 (66-64-69), four shots clear of Clemson's Andrew Swanson.
The Hokies return to the links Feb. 9-11 at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
