SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Hokies (7-13, 1-9 ACC) fell to Syracuse (13-9, 1-9 ACC) on Sunday afternoon in five sets (25-21, 16-25, 25-21, 24-26, 13-15).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse opened the first set with a 4-0 scoring run and wided the gap to a 7-1 lead. The Hokies battled back to 10-7 lead after a 9-0 run from the squad, highlighted by three aces in four serves from Jasmine Robinson. Tech and Syracuse then entered into a cutthroat battle, trading points the entirety of the set. Once the score reached 21-21, the Hokies were able to pull away and capture the opening set win with a 4-0 run, pushing the first to 25-21.
Set two was highlighted by Robinson and Malinowski teaming up for two blocks with five Hokies putting points on the board. The Orange secured a sneaky slow lead early in the set only to widen the advantage to 20-10. The Hokies fell in set two, 16-25.
In the opposite fashion, set three was a domination from the Hokies. No lead changes and no tie scores led to a 25-21 set win, sending Tech up 2-1 in the match. Belle Patrick led the offensive efforts with four kills, two of them from the back row.
Set four started in a similar fashion to set two, with the Orange capturing an early lead and holding it to mid-set. Hailey Pearce carried the fourth with six kills and six digs, helping the Hokies to tie it up at 24-24 but ultimately, the squad fell 24-26 and the match went to five.
The fifth set was a battle from the start with teams trading points from 1-1 to 13-13. Pearce laid it all out again in the fifth with five kills and 11 flawless receptions but the squad fell in the fifth, 13-15, giving Syracuse the conference victory.
GAME NOTES
- Hailey Pearce recorded her third career double-double with a career-high 21 kills and 13 digs with three aces.
- Viktoria Wahlgren notched her fifth career double-double with 24 assists and a tied career-high of 15 digs with two aces and two block assists.
- Leandra Mangual Duran recorded her 13th match of the season with double-digit digs and perfect receptions, tallying 12 digs with 11 flawless receptions.
- Jasmine Robinson boasted three aces in the first set alone with two kills, two digs and four block assists in the match.
- Sarah Malinowski posted four block assists, tying for the team-high with Robinson, and tacked on six kills with two digs.
- Belle Patrick followed Pearce's offensive efforts with 14 kills and three digs. The freshman outside hitter saw 38 receptions with just one error.
- Erica Dellesky reached a career-high of 22 assists with four digs.
- Tech totaled 55 kills, 53 assists, 52 digs, 12 total blocks and eight aces.
