Hokies battle at Wolfpack Elite GAC Invitational

The Hokies took home a pair of third place finishes at the Wolfpack Elite GAC Invite.

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  The Hokies took third place on both sides at the Wolfpack Elite GAC Invitational as the women earned 1338 points and the men earned 1352.5. 

 

Hokie Women: 

Carmen Weiler Sastre continued to dominate the pool, setting a new program fourth-best time in the 50 freestyle with a 22.11, good for fourth place. On Friday, she set the program’s third-best time in the 100 back with a fifth-place 52.18 and on Saturday, recorded the third-best time in program history in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.02.

Emily Claesson had an impressive weekend as well, locking in a program ninth-best time in the 200 free prelims with a 1:46.96, placing third. Saturday, she set the program's fourth-best time in the 100 freestyle (48.33). She took home a second-place finish in the 100 free prelims, recording a 48.61.

Emma Atkinson posted a first-place finish in the 200 free with a 1:45.57. She also added a seventh-place finish in the 200 back finals with a 1:53.43. 

Athena Meneses Kovacs was essential to the Hokies’ efforts, helping the team to a fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay. She took sixth in the 100 fly with a 53.12 and seventh in the 100 back with a 54.21. 

Nichelly Lysy posted an impressive 1:01.59 in the 100 breaststroke, setting a new ninth-best program time. In the 200 breaststroke, she set the fourth-best program time with a 2:12.83. 

Kate Anderson swam a 16:34.33 in the 1650 free, good for fourth place. Her time of 4:47.89 was also good for ninth in the 500 free. In the 1650 free, Maddy Grafmiller took eighth place (16:51.61) and Sydney Starnes took 10th place (16:54.78).  

Weiler Sastre, Santos, Meneses Kovacs and Claesson set the seventh-best time in program history in the 200 medley relay with a 1:38.30, as well as a fourth place 400 medley relay (3:35.84). This was followed by a program sixth-best 400 free relay from Weiler Sastre, Claesson, Atkinson and Meneses Kovacs (3:13.75). 

Claesson, Summers, Atkinson and Weiler Sastre posted a fifth-place 200 free relay (1:29.71), and Weiler Sastre, Claesson, Atkinson and Meneses Kovacs closed out the invite with a second-place 400 free relay (3:13.75). 

On the boards, Peyton Guziec took fourth place on 1m with a 280.95 and fifth place on platform with 214.80. Grace Austin took third place on 3m with a 306.40 and fourth place on platform with a 241.95. 

 

Hokie Men: 

Carles Coll Marti swam the fastest 200 breast in the NCAA this season with a 1:50.09, earning him first place. He took second place in the 200 IM (1:42.98) and first place in the 100 breast prelims (52.47) and finals (51.10). 

Youssef Ramadan placed seventh in the 50 free (19.46), fifth in the 100 fly finals (45.62) and second in the 100 back (45.76). He swam a 1:43.60 200 fly as well, good for fourth place. William Hayon placed seventh in the 100 fly with a 46.19, followed by Mario Molla Yanes’ eighth-place finish (46.29).

Brendan Whitfield took sixth in the 50 free with a 19.43, fifth in the 100 free (42.31) and ninth in the 200 free (1:35.40). Jakub Poliacik recorded a 1:35.48 in the 200 free, which earned him 10th. Nico Garcia Saiz finished fourth in the 200 back with a 1:43.13. 

Ramadan, Coll Marti, Hayon and Whitfield helped the team to a program seventh-best 400 medley relay (3:04.89), an eighth-best 200 free relay (1:16.43) and eighth-best 400 free relay. The squad also posted a third-place 200 medley relay with a 1:24.49. 

On the boards, Nathan Cox recorded a first-place finish on 1m with a score of 353.60. Jacob Fisher earned first place on 3m with a 397.90, and fourth place on 1m with 333.05. 

 

Next Up: The Hokies head back to Greensboro, N.C. for the U.S. Open Dec. 4.
