BLACKSBURG – Led by Sam Tackett’s two-homer, six-RBI day at the plate on Sunday – highlighted by his mammoth, 500-foot home run arcing over the Hokies’ pitching lab in left field – the Virginia Tech baseball team resiliently trounced Bucknell, 27-1, in seven innings to clinch the teams’ three-game series at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
Virginia Tech (2-1) set its ACC-era record for most runs scored, chalking 27 runs for the 12th time spanning more than a century of program history (first instance since 2002). The Hokies’ 26-run win featured four big innings of six runs or more, ranking as the program’s sixth greatest margin of victory all-time.
Tackett’s six RBIs (career high) were earned progressively during his opening three at-bats of the contest. The redshirt-outfielder singled in Jared Davis during the first inning for the 5-0 lead, clubbed a two-run homer to left center field during the second inning for the 10-0 lead and plated three runs on his 500-foot shot during the third inning that put the Hokies ahead, 16-0.
In total, 17 Virginia Tech players accounted for the team’s 27 runs with 13 landing in the hit column and 11 charting at least one RBI.
On the mound, freshman right-hand starter Logan Eisenreich made his collegiate debut to the tune of four scoreless innings and four strikeouts, earning his first career winning decision. Right-hander Marcel Kulik and left-hander Parker Sweeney completed the rookie-only pitching line for Virginia Tech that combined to allow one run on two hits.
