BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 17/18 Virginia Tech fell to No. 7/7 LSU, 7-4, on the final day of the Purple & Gold Challenge on Sunday at Tiger Park.
Michelle Chatfield hit her first home run of the season and Jayden Jones hit her first career home run.
How It Happened: LSU 7, Virginia Tech 4
Despite giving up two runs in the bottom of the second, the Hokies responded with one run in the top of the third. With Jayden Jones on second, Zoe Yaeger singled up the middle to bring in the first Hokie run of the game to cut the deficit.
LSU tacked on four more runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead, but the Hokies responded with a solo shot to left field from Michelle Chatfield – her first home run of the season – to cut the Tiger lead to 6-2.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead, but the Hokies did not go down without a fight.
