Storylines to Know:

Virginia Tech squares off against a Florida State team that has enjoyed success at home.

This weekend’s matchup serves as the seventh home game of Florida State’s season thus far. The Seminoles are 4-2 in the six games the program has hosted in 2025, their only home losses being consecutive games against conference foes Miami and Pitt on Oct. 4 and Oct. 11, respectively.

Comparatively, the Hokies have split the two true road games they’ve played, answering the call against NC State on Sept. 27 while coming up short against then-No. 13 Georgia Tech on Oct. 11. Saturday’s contest marks the third of four road matchups for the Hokies this season, as the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash at rival Virginia on Nov. 29 will close out the 2025 regular season.

The Hokies face yet another dual-threat quarterback in senior Thomas Castellanos.

Throughout the 2025 season, Virginia Tech has faced opponents that boast quarterbacks who are proficient in passing and running the ball. This weekend’s matchup is no different.

Now in his first year as a Seminole, senior quarterback Thomas Castellanos has led the Florida State offense in nine starts at the helm. The Waycross, Ga. native has posted 225 or more passing yards in seven of those nine starts, including a 271-yard passing performance against Wake Forest in a 42-7 victory on Nov. 1.

What makes Castellanos dangerous is his ability to use his legs. Standing at 5-foot-11, 201 pounds, the senior’s smaller frame allows for quick exits out of the pocket and scrambles for gains all over the field. His 359 rush yards currently rank second on the team, trailing only starting back Gavin Sawchuk (433 rushing yards).

Hokie Nation will have to pay attention to how Virginia Tech’s Lunch Pail Defense will limit Castellanos’s production as a passer and runner. The team’s leaders in sacks, Kemari Copeland (4.5) and Elhadj Fall (2.5), are both expected to dress.

Players to Know:

Running Back Marcellous Hawkins
In his first year with the Hokies, running back Marcellous Hawkins has ascended to the top of the stat sheet behind a team-high 576 rushing yards. Standing at 5-foot-11, 219 pounds, the Central Missouri transfer’s ability to make quick cuts around opposing players has been key for the Hokies, as seen in his 167-yard explosion against Cal on Oct. 24. Hokie Nation should especially keep their eyes peeled for the Oklahoma City, Okla. native against a Seminoles defense that has allowed 112.6 rush yards per game to opponents.

Linebacker Caleb Woodson
Six-foot-three, 230 pounds junior linebacker Caleb Woodson has made his impact known through six appearances this season. The Haymarket, Va. product is second on the team with 41 tackles (20 solo) and is one of just seven Lunch Pail Defense members to have registered a breakup, pass deflection and quarterback hit in 2025. If Woodson can achieve six or more tackles against the Seminoles this Saturday, it will be the sixth time in seventh appearances in which the linebacker will have done so.
