Senior Associate Athletics Director, Clinical and Sport Psychologist

Gary started working as VT Athletics’ clinical and sport psychologist in 2000 and transitioned into that role full time in 2007. He coordinates the CAMP program.  He is a member of the VT Athletics Leadership Institute staff and serves on several committees within the Athletics Department. Gary received a B.A. in English from Centre College where he played baseball and earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kentucky. He is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and is also a Certified Mental Performance Consultant.  He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Psychological Association (APA), Division 47 (Exercise and Sport Psychology)  and the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). In addition he is a fellow of the Clinical/Counseling Sport Psychology Association. Gary’s responsibilities include providing individual counseling to student-athletes; working with teams to improve cohesion and performance; assisting in planning and implementing leadership programming; overseeing ADHD and substance misuse programming; consulting with coaches, sports medicine staff, nutrition staff, and administration regarding student-athlete needs, and providing 24-hour on-call coverage.
