Assistant Coach (Distance)

Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, Ben Thomas, annouced the evelation of Katie Kennedy to assistant coach on August 19, 2024.  

In her new role, Kennedy will assist with the cross country and track and field programs as a distance coach.

Katie Kennedy joined the staff in the fall of 2018 as Director of Operations.
 
The Springfield, Va., native is responsible for the day-to-day administration and operation of the track and field and cross country program. Kennedy’s primary duties include budget management, meet management, NCAA compliance, and team travel and logistics. She also serves as the program’s liaison with facilities, events, academics, public relations, marketing and promotions, and equipment.
 
Prior to arriving in Blacksburg, Kennedy interned with New York Road Runners in the Media & Public Relations department and was involved with the Professional Athlete department as well. She assisted with press operations for various NYRR events, including on-site coverage for the TCS New York City Marathon and the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile.
 
Kennedy was a member of the track and field and cross country teams at Virginia Tech and graduated cum laude in 2018 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations. She was the cross country team MVP in 2016 and 2017. She was a member of the third place finishing women’s DMR team at the 2018 Indoor NCAA Championships earning All-American status.
