Recruiting Coordinator

Joined Virginia Tech men’s basketball staff: 2024 and enters his first year with the program.

With the Hokies: Oversees Tech’s strategy and day-to-day for recruiting, handles logistics for on-campus visits and manages recruiting projects and graphics. Additionally, he will help with on-court player development and player and team scouting.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Wetherington comes from elite college men's basketball programs, most recently serving the Arkansas Razorbacks as the Assistant Director of Recruiting and Scouting for two seasons (2022-24). In addition to his role in evaluating players for recruiting and scouting, Wetherington used his video skills to assist with scouting of opposing teams and his graphic skills help with in-house recruiting projects. 

In 2022-23, Arkansas reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and had three players – Anthony Black, Nick Smith Jr., and Jordan Walsh – drafted within the first 40 picks of the 2023 NBA Draft. Off the court, Arkansas inked McDonald’s All-American Baye Fall and consensus top-40 recruit Layden Blocker while bringing in one of the top-5 transfer portal classes.

Prior to his time at Arkansas, Wetherington spent four seasons (2018-2022) at Iowa State as a Graduate Assistant and then the Recruiting and Scouting Coordinator. He assisted the staff in developing and maintaining Iowa State men’s basketball’s brand, as well as other recruiting and scouting duties. During his time in Ames, Wetherington was part of a pair of NCAA Tournament teams, including a Sweet 16 run in 2022 and a Big 12 Tournament Title in 2019. He additionally helped in the development of three future NBA Draft Picks including Marial Shayok, Talen Horton-Tucker and Tyrese Haliburton.

Off the court, Wetherington was one of 22 graduate assistants across all levels of college basketball to participate in the inaugural (2020) GA Top Connect GALA, one of college basketball’s top leadership workshops.

Wetherington joined the ISU program after five years at Murray State, the last of which he served as a Graduate Assistant for the Racers. In his time at Murray State, the Racers won a pair of Ohio Valley Conference regular season titles and the 2018 OVC Tournament. MSU advanced to the postseason three times during Wetherington’s time at the school.

Wetherington coached and mentored two OVC Player of the Year winners in Jonathan Stark and Ja Morant, who was selected as the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and later was named the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Personal: Wetherington is from Mayfield, Ky., and he and his fiancée, Jasmine Nguyen, reside in Christiansburg.
